On Saturday, November 23rd, the Urban League of Portland held its first ever community shred event. Urban League of Portland staff, Young Professionals, and other volunteers gathered at our offices at 10 N Russell to help our community prevent fraud, protect their identities, and recycle. A mobile shredding unit from EnviroShred NW was on hand to destroy sensitive documents with cross cutting shredding, which securely destroys documents without any chance of reconstruction. During the two-hour clinic, over 25 families and individuals came by with boxes of sensitive documents for shredding, to protect their financial security and recycle. This event, in addition to preventing fraud, made a real impact on the local environment: we recycled approximately 1,520 Lbs. of recyclable paper. As a result of this, the following resources were conserved:
289 Gallons of Oil
5,320 Gallons of Water
3,648 Kilowatt Hours of Energy
76 Cubic Yards of Landfill Space
We were excited to be able to offer this free and necessary service in our community and look forward to doing again!
