Position: Academic Dean (9-12)


Position Description

Catlin Gabel School seeks a progressive, innovative, experienced educator to develop and oversee an engaging, challenging, and inspiring curriculum and related programs. The Academic Dean works closely with the Head of Upper School and the Dean of Students to develop, assess, and continuously improve educational programs, policies, and experiences that align with the school’s mission. The Academic Dean works with teachers, staff, students, and families to foster a learning environment based on principles of inquiry, experience, integrity, collaboration, equity, inclusion, and serving the whole student.


Essential Duties

Develop, oversee, and assess academic policies and practices
Lead the professional learning and faculty evaluation and coaching programs
Coordinate curriculum development and alignment
Promote cross-disciplinary work with department chairs and program directors
Supervise/evaluate 25-30 teachers, including new teachers
Supervise the Learning Center, learning specialists, and Foundations program
Assist Upper School head with personnel and staff issues
Assist Upper School head with faculty meetings and retreats
Assist Upper School head in general divisional matters
Act as lead Upper School administrator when Upper School head is off campus
Serve as planning/point person on faculty searches and hiring
Coordinate the faculty mentor program
Oversee the Global Online Academy
Serve as the Mastery Transcript Site Director
Coordinate standardized assessment programs
Teach a class, as available


Interpersonal Contacts

The Academic Dean works with teachers, staff, and students in the Upper School to ensure a high-quality, mission-driven, progressive curriculum and learning experience. The Dean ensures a coherent learning scope and sequence and collaborates with other divisions to ensure vertical alignment and develop cross-disciplinary, experiential curricula. The Dean will foster a laboratory environment by coordinating and encouraging innovative work by Upper School employees.

Education and/or Experience

BA or BS from an accredited college or university required; Master’s preferable. Knowledge of progressive education and experience in curriculum and program development, teacher supervision and evaluation, and instructional design in grades 9-12 is desirable.


Working Conditions

12-month position, the academic calendar plus approx. 4 weeks of vacation during the summer.  Office and campus environment.  Additional time is required beyond a normal work day or week for evening and some weekend meetings and gatherings.
