The City of Gresham is seeking a team player who enjoys working in a busy shop environment to fill an exciting new opportunity as a Fleet Parts Specialist. This position will manage tools, parts and supplies for the City’s Fleet Division which includes heavy equipment, fire equipment and apparatus, police vehicles, as well as a variety of other motorized vehicles. The Fleet Parts Specialist will work directly with the Vehicle Mechanics in identifying, locating, and procuring parts.
Gresham, the fourth largest city in the state of Oregon, is located between Portland and Mount Hood near the scenic Columbia River Gorge. This position is currently budgeted as a Full-time (40 hours per week), two year limited-term position. It is anticipated that the Fleet division will continue to have ongoing needs beyond the initial two year period. This status may change, subject to future budget approval.
We are looking for someone to manage inventory and maintain a computerized inventory control system relating to the purchase of materials and supplies for the Fleet Division. This will include vendor data, stock descriptions, quantities, price information, and shipment methods. There will be some variety with daily work as you collaborate with vehicle mechanics and other employees in a team environment. We want someone with a desire to serve the public, who is easy to get along with, and will work effectively with management and automotive staff. Attention to detail and accuracy will be important attributes for data monitoring, recording, and reporting. The ability to coordinate timelines to ensure availability of requested supplies, parts and equipment will contribute to your success in this position.
As the primary contact for parts, equipment and supply vendors, a friendly disposition and clear communication will be required. In this role, you will research and evaluate vendors on pricing, quality and inventory and also obtain quotes and make recommendations regarding purchase. A key strength we are requiring is the ability to embrace and operate within a modest budget while following policy guidelines.
This position will involve steady movement and some lifting of heavy objects to load, receive, unload/unpack and store equipment and supplies. You will also arrange the storeroom for quick and accurate access of parts inventory. Retrieving parts and ensuring timely delivery may involve driving to pick up parts and supply orders directly from vendors. Driving large vehicles and shuttling city employees is also a unique part of this position. The successful candidate will need to be proficient at moving people and equipment around the city as part of their daily work, all while balancing the priorities of their in-shop duties.
Your personable nature will enhance providing technical customer service to department staff. You may be required to interpret and explain purchasing rules and regulations while also answering questions and resolving problems or complaints.
The Fleet Parts Specialist requires knowledge of automotive and heavy equipment components as well as necessary materials, tools and supplies associated with repair and maintenance. You will use your background in electronic parts control and management systems/programs on a regular basis. Ultimately, you will need to be flexible in your work and be proactive through observation in determining what needs to be done. Computer literacy and a customer focused approach to work delivery are essential. Experience conducting internet searches for protocols and sourcing materials will be needed.
This role depends on attention to detail and accuracy in all job activities, prioritizing, and multitasking with limited or no direct supervision. We need someone who knows or is capable of learning governmental purchasing practices, methods and procedures. Strong organizational skills are crucial. You must have the ability to operate a forklift, pallet truck, hand tools, dolly/hand-truck and City vehicles as needed to pick up, load and unload and move materials and supplies. We desire someone who can communicate effectively, both orally and in writing while interacting well with diverse groups of people at all levels within and outside the City agency.
Any equivalent combination of education and experience providing the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
-Graduation from high school or a GED
-Progressively responsible experience in automotive parts purchasing and inventory. Experience working in a fleet environment that includes heavy equipment as well as passenger vehicles is desired by not required.
-Must have the physical ability to perform the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
Must have experience, familiarity, and a comfort level maneuvering heavy equipment in confined spaces as well as on public roads.
The ability to lift objects and equipment ranging from 25 to 50 pounds is a requirement. You must be able to bend, lift, stoop, kneel, and climb. Standing for prolonged periods of time as well as pushing, lifting, pulling and carrying heavy and bulky objects will be involved.
Licenses, Certificates, and Other Requirements:
-Valid driver’s license
-Fork lift operator’s certificate upon hire or within six months of hire
-Commercial Driver’s License (Class A) will be required within six months of hire
