Get to know Hillsboro, come work for the City of Hillsboro as a Water Meter Reader.  This opportunity is a great gateway to the City and all that we offer.  The City has over 25,000 utility billing accounts including residential, commercial, and industrial accounts.

The Meter Reader’s job is to make sure that the meters are read accurately and timely so all accounts can be billed properly on a monthly basis.  In this job you get a little of everything; some office time, but mostly you are out in the field.  Strong customer service skills are highly desired as you help our new customers and those moving out get their water turned on or off.  This job has a lot of autonomy as most of your time will be spent in the field and with that you become the face of the City making customer experiences one of the most important pieces of this job.

The Ideal Candidate:

Motivated and driven to provide top notch customer service for over 25,000 utility customers.
Highly organized with strong time management skills, attention to detail, and maintains accurate work records.
Able to work autonomously and multi- task i.e. read meters, maintain meters and meter boxes, service connection/disconnection, hang door tags, and trouble shoot meter issues.
Ability to work closely with other department staff on daily functions, responsibilities, and workload.
Basic computer knowledge including use of Outlook, Word, Excel; meter reading software i.e. Neptune is preferred but not required
Some basic knowledge and skills of how water meters work and other equipment and/or the ability to learn certain technical aspects related to job and ability to troubleshoot as needed.
Current/Upcoming Projects:

The majority of the City’s meters are Automated Meter Reading (AMR) meters, but we still have some manual read meters left.  We will be working closely with the Water Department to get the remaining meters changed over to AMR.

The City is growing to the north and to the south and is also building along with partner agencies a new and redundant secondary water source.   We are always looking for ways to be more efficient in what we do as we grow and welcome the perspectives of those doing the job.

General Statement of Duties

The principal function of an employee in this class is to perform manual/general work associated with meter reading and maintenance to include, but not limited to reading water meters, recording consumption data, completing service orders, maintaining meter boxes and lids, assisting with meter repairs, and interacting and providing direct service to City utility customers.

Acceptable Experience and Training

High School Diploma or GED and 2 years’ experience related to area of assignment; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. Prior experience in meter reading is desired.

Licensing/Certifications
• Valid Driver’s License and safe driving record.
