Electricians install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair a variety of electrical and instrumentation equipment, circuits and controls such as motors, drives, switchgear, service equipment, generators, controllers, electrically operated valves and pumps, microprocessors, transformers, branch circuits including control circuits and lighting. Work varies from bureau to bureau but could include rigging guy wires, installing rigid conduit, installing signal heads and street lights, splicing cable, performing preventative maintenance on electrical systems, troubleshooting drives and motors, troubleshooting control circuits, and repairing and installing appliances and light fixtures. In some instances, responsibilities may include working on alarm systems, instrumentation, distributed control systems, communication systems, and/or PLC programming and repair. Experience with voltages from 480VAC up to 5KV, and experience with electronic devices (computer, tablets and associated software) is desired but not required. Both should be noted in your resume.
Work also includes implementing scheduled maintenance programs using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS). Work may involve off-hour standby, various work shifts/hours, weekends, and, occasionally, mandatory overtime. The current vacancy is in the Bureau of Environmental Service. The eligible list from this recruitment may also be used to fill future vacancies in the Portland Bureau of Transportation, Portland Water Bureau, and Portland Parks & Recreation.
The following minimum qualifications are required for this position:
1. Knowledge of and experience interpreting and applying the National Electrical Code (NEC).
2. Experience performing electrical repair, modification and installation such as wiring motors, various types of lighting control, controllers and troubleshooting for voltages from 24VDC up to 480 VAC.
3. Experience working collaboratively and effectively with coworkers in a diverse organization.
4. Ability to learn and use safe work practices, maintain daily activity reports, perform layout and sketch design for electrical installations, and repairs.
Applicants must also possess:
-A valid state driver’s license and acceptable driving record at the time of hire.
-General Journeyman Electrician’s license, OR a Limited Manufacturing Plant Journeyman’s license, OR a General Supervising or Limited Supervising Electricians License, OR a Manufacturing Plant license, at the time of hire.
