Among the woodlands, wetlands and wildlife of the hills of Southwest Portland lies the unique educational experience that is Oregon Episcopal School. Oregon Episcopal School is seeking a skilled, passionate, and culturally competent individual to teach P.E. to students in grades K through five in a positive, collaborative, child-centered environment. The teacher will provide instruction following OES standards and methods and recognized best practice. The teacher will promote curiosity and the exploration of physical literacy while fostering an appreciation for lifelong fitness. The teacher will be expected to cultivate in students the OES values of community, social responsibility, and respect for individual differences. In addition to the qualifications detailed below, the successful P.E. teacher candidate will possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, strong organizational skills, and the ability to support the OES mission, vision, and identity.

This is a one year interim engagement with the opportunity to apply for the regular position in 2020-2021. It is a .75 FTE (30 hrs/wk) academic year position that starts on August 19 and comes with a competitive salary and benefits package, including 95 percent employer paid group medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee, 25 percent for dependents, 403(b) retirement plan with generous employer match, professional development opportunities, and one excellent meal daily. ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Develop the physical skills and abilities of the students.
  • Team teach Kindergarten through 5th grade physical education classes emphasizing the development of physical literacy skills.
  • Develop a physically challenging and creative program with developmentally appropriate and research-based practices.
  • Implement a strong, inquiry-based and differentiated physical education curriculum.
  • Individualize instruction and educate the whole child.
  • Be responsible for team teaching in indoor and outdoor spaces.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues in a spirit of openness and cooperation.
  • Utilize a variety of instructional and assessment methods.
  • Integrate technology to support student learning.
  • Develop familiarity with a framework for understanding students’ individual strengths, affinities, and challenges.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BA or equivalent in a relevant discipline
  • Two years’ P.E. teaching experience
  • Broad knowledge of P.E. curricula
  • Intercultural competence, ability to teach diverse groups of students effectively; ability to interact appropriately with a diverse array of students, coworkers, family members
  • IT skills: general digital literacy, proficiency using a Mac, database, Google Drive, web based applications, some knowledge of educational technology; openness to innovation, ability to learn
  • Current First Aid and CPR Certifications (OES offers training once per year)
  • Ability to pass a background check and drug screen

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MA/MS in relevant discipline
  • Experience teaching physical education in elementary school
  • Team teaching experience
  • Experience teaching in an independent school setting

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to cultivate a sense of community, social responsibility, and service among students
  • Ability to grow professionally and to stay abreast of changes in the field of physical education
  • Interpersonal skills, ability to collaborate, work effectively on teams, and maintain collegial relations with colleagues
  • Communication skills, ability to listen and to communicate clearly verbally and in writing

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds on a regular basis
  • Ability to set-up and take down a variety of physical education equipment
  • Mobility sufficient to demonstrate and model the full range of physical education activities
  • Mobility sufficient to move about the campus and to assure the safety of young children
  • Ability to see, hear, and speak to interact with students, parents, and groups of individuals

 

COMPENSATION: OES Faculty Salary Scale based on degree and years of experience
