Oregon Health & Science University is seeking a full-time 1.0 FTE Dental Practice Manager. Responsibilities include oversight of clinic services, utilization of auxiliary staff, and facilitating processes with dental students to ensure that quality patient care is provided and that clinical operations run effectively. This position supervises Dental Assistants, Dental Hygienists, Care Coordinators, and Radiologic Technologists and provides oversight of functions including but not limited to unusual occurrence reporting, patient status audits, and general dental assistant/hygiene programs and training.  This position must coordinate with other personnel such as chairs, directors, group leaders, faculty, residents and students to ensure effective clinical operations in the DMD and postdoctoral clinic programs.  This position serves as the backup for the Business Services Manager, Patient Services Manager, and Clinical Affairs as needed.

  • Bachelor’s degree in management or other similar areas of study AND
  • 3 years’ experience managing staff in an academic dental clinic OR
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience totaling 7 years
  • Training as a dental assistant or dental hygienist
  • Three or more years of dental office management experience
  • Three years’ experience in an academic dental clinic setting
  • Three years’ experience as a chairside dental assistant
  • Three or more years’ experience managing employees, which includes performance management, coaching, hiring and selection, workflow functions
  • Experience with process improvements in an academic dental clinic setting
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations within an academic dental clinic (includes knowledge of the Oregon Dental Practice Act, OSHA, and infection control guidelines)
  • Ability to lead others, coach employees, build relationships with faculty and students
  • Knowledge of basic dental clinic functions and the multi-layered schedules (students, faculty, staff)
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Knowledge of Electronic Dental Records software (axiUm or EPIC) and how it affects the clinic scheduling processes
  • Possible exposure to human tissue/fluids
  • Work is in a patient care environment which includes noise and handling patient charts
  • Must be able to work in a small close environment
  • Possible exposure to human tissue/fluids
  • It will be necessary to be conversant with infection control guidelines, blood borne pathogen standards with regard to handling of instruments and personal protective equipment with knowledge of the MSDS standards
  • Lengthy vacations of a week or more should be planned during clinic off times mid-Aug through mid-Sept, between Dec 25 and Jan 2
  • Ability to sit performing dental assistant duties for up to two 3 hour sessions on occasion
  • Ability to sit at a computer most of an 8 hour day
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation



  • Certified dental assistant or eligible for certification
  • Broad experience in dental school setting encompassing multiple functional areas
