The Job:

The VP of Engineering is the head of Simple’s Engineering function, and a leader across the company who has a deep understanding of the product, customer experience, and the drivers of revenue & profitability. As the VP of Engineering, you’ll work closely with other department heads to identify opportunities that will optimize Simple’s long term success. As a VP at Simple, you will be expected to drive innovation across all parts of the business.

Within the Engineering group, you will be responsible for the design and implementation of successful engineering strategies that scale alongside the changing needs of our customers, team, and business. You’ll be directly responsible for managing a department of engineers (both onsite & remote) that includes Front End, Backend, Infrastructure, Security, Data and QA Engineers, as well as Information Technology.

In addition, you will manage, mentor, and lead employees across multiple engineering jobs and levels, including a team of Engineering Managers. You’ll do this by embracing our commitment to team health and learning+development by owning engagement programs and ensuring a commitment to ongoing career development. You will not only actively partner with Product, Analytics, Customer Operations, and other teams to build the infrastructure to help them run faster, but you will also be expected to be an active driver of new ideas and innovation across these areas, leveraging your combined understanding of the customer experience, financial and technology drivers for our business.You’ll also be responsible for building and maintaining strong relationships with our partner bank, BBVA, while understanding the nature & drivers of BBVA’s business.

The Team:

This role is responsible for creating an environment (for both on-site and remote engineers) that fosters and values teamwork, commits to decisions and plans of actions, and will hold one another accountable. Within the Simple leadership team, you will play a key role in building trust and cohesion among the highest level of leadership at Simple. You’ll also help ensure Simple is driving forward as one cohesive business, taking into consideration the end-to-end customer experience.

As far as technologies go, we work in Scala, with a bit of Java and Ruby. Most of our data is stored in PostgreSQL, we use Kafka and RabbitMQ, and we’re hosted in AWS. Our apps are native iOS and Android along with a web app written in React. We use Cypress and native testing frameworks with dedicated CI/CD hardware for mobile. Our code is continuously deployed and we ship mobile releases every two weeks. We don’t require experience in our exact stack, but experience with the technologies we use (or equivalent) is a plus.

About You:

You are a strong voice of the customer, a seasoned people manager, and a strategic and analytical leader with a vision who thrives in a dynamic, evolving environment. You have a proven track-record of fostering a culture of ownership and responsibility for our products within and across teams. You demonstrate a deep curiosity of financial drivers, and demand an understanding of the financial outcomes tied to engineering projects. You have also demonstrated the ability to make very tough decisions that deal with large tradeoffs across financial drivers, customer experience, and platform improvements. When making these tradeoffs you have demonstrated the ability to communicate the criteria behind these decisions in an open, transparent way, and have gained the trust of your organization.

What You’ll Do All Day:

Oversee an Engineering team of ~70 engineers and create & maintain an environment that supports both onsite and remote engineers (40% of the team is remote).
Serve as a mentor to Engineering leaders in their career development.
Ensure alignment with Product Management, define metrics to measure team success, and remain accountable for the team’s results.
Lead the team to continuously improve the SDLC within a kanban environment to maximize quality and velocity while delivering customer value through multiple concurrent projects, on time and within budget.
Work closely with Product Management to execute on a shared roadmap.
Ensure prompt responses to urgent issues that are client and revenue impacting within established SLAs.
Employ industry best practices to drive innovation, address technical debt, advance system architecture, and improve processes.
Represent the Engineering team while partnering with other departments in cross-company initiatives and issues.
Provide ongoing visibility to the CEO and senior leaders.
Actively contribute to technology selections and architectural direction.
Recruit and retain top-level talent to scale teams while maintaining performance, quality, and best practices.
Foster a high-performance culture by promoting ownership and responsibility across the Engineering team.
We’d Like To See:

10+ years of related leadership experience (including experience as a director-level or higher) motivating other managers and multiple disciplines.
10+ years of experience in the Financial Services and/or consumer technology industries.  Bonus for regulated industries.
Direct Product Management experience, or experience defining, creating, and launching customer-facing products.
5+ years hands on experience architecting/developing mobile product lines within highly available, complex technical infrastructures.
Professional experience with enterprise architecture hosted in AWS, as well as extensive experience using Scala or another JVM-based language.
2+ years or strongly proficient in delivering products using Kanban or other agile frameworks
Proven ability to attract, retain and develop leaders and associates with a long-term vision for developing capabilities and succession planning to ensure sustainable business success.
A proven track record of maintaining a workplace that attracts and retains top engineering talent.
Prior experience coordinating with Compliance/Info-Sec in a highly-regulated industry with routine audits, preferably PCI-DSS.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with both highly-technical teams and non-technical business leaders.
Strong attention to detail with prior experience developing KPIs and metrics
Professional, hands-on, team-oriented attitude with sound judgment and analytical skills.
