Statement from the Urban League of Portland on the Resignation of Governor Kitzhaber

KitzhaberThe announcement of the resignation of Governor John Kitzhaber is a sad one for the state of Oregon.  As a non-partisan organization we are not beholden to any political entity. We are, however, supportive of those individuals in public life whose work and commitment to community and equity aligns with our own.  Throughout his tenure, John Kitzhaber was a leader with whom we held many shared interests.  As our Governor, he was committed to equity and fairness for those who are sometimes left out or left behind. He was a staunch supporter of civic engagement, addressing inequities in health care, increasing voter registration and voter participation and making material changes in the educational opportunities afforded children from under-served communities in Oregon.

We thank Governor Kitzhaber for his years of dedication and service to our state and our community. We wish him the very best in the future.

Moving forward, we are ready and eager to work with Secretary Kate Brown in her new role as Governor. We look forward to collaborating with her as we jointly work to support our shared values and beliefs.
