The Urban League of Portland is currently seeking a designer for the next State of Black Oregon, to be released by the end of this year or early next year. The State of Black Oregon is a 100 to 140 page document released by the Urban League every 5 years. The 2009 report was a groundbreaking document which told the story of Black Oregonians for the first time through data, research, case studies and essays from experts around the state. It helped inform policymakers about the issues most deeply affecting Oregon’s Black communities and has been used in academic curricula around the state.
The next report will include updated research, data, essays, case studies and photographs of Black Oregonians from across the state. The designer will be working closely with Urban League staff as well as the report’s lead photographer, Intisar Abioto, of the Black Portlanders project.
The next State of Black Oregon will chart an aspirational and practice pathway forward for policymakers and for our communities. We are looking for a designer who can help bring the content of the report to life in a way that reaches the largest audience and mobilizes people to come together around a stronger and healthier Oregon.
