Statement of the Urban League of Portland Regarding Indiana’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act

The Urban League of Portland, along with the National Urban League and the Urban League of Northwest Indiana, add our voices to the many expressions of deep concern from throughout the country about the Religious Freedom Restoration Act that was recently approved by the Indiana General Assembly and signed by Governor Pence.

The Urban League works every day to guarantee that all people are treated with respect and that the constitutionally-guaranteed rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are protected for everyone.

The Urban League of Portland is committed to diversity, equity and inclusion, for which we are a recognized leader in our region. We must oppose even the slightest appearance of legally-sanctioned discrimination and take further exception to invoking religion as a basis forth e potential infringement of the equal rights of all persons.

We echo the objections of our fellow National Urban League affiliate in Indiana, and call upon the Indiana General Assembly and the Governor to repeal this legislation that can  be seen as an attempt to limit the substantive but fragile advances in civil rights that have been achieved during the last half-century.
